RLM updates – A change from existing procedure

With the firmware updates with revisions above 3.1 the usual procedure of rlm update does not work. This is mentioned in detail in the rlm download section.

Usual procedure

  1. Download the rlm firwware and copy it to the software folder
  2. software install rlm firmware
  3. rlm update and rlm reboot.

For version 4.0 and above the procedure is as follows:

  1. Download the rlm firwware and copy it to the software folder
  2. software install rlm firmware
  3. Go to advanced mode (priv set advanced)
  4. rlm update -f
  5. rlm reboot

Note: Dont be caught out with the usual message “Please type ‘rlm update’ to load the new RLM firmware.”. This will not work.

Example

Step 1
filer1> software list
RLM_FW.zip

Step 2
filer1> software install RLM_FW.zip
software: You can cancel this operation by hitting Ctrl-C in the next 6 seconds.

Please type ‘rlm update’ to load the new RLM firmware.

Step 3
filer1> priv set advanced
Warning: These advanced commands are potentially dangerous; use them only when directed to do so by NetApp personnel.

filer1*> rlm update -f
Updating the RLM firmware.

Please ensure you have run ‘software install’ command with correct parameters for ‘rlm update’ prior to this step.
DO NOT reset this system during this process.
This might take about 27 mins…

New RLM version : 4.1
Current RLM version : 3.1
Sending files to RLM
……………………………………………………………………………………………………
Installing package on RLM
…………………………………………………………………………………………….

RLM: Firmware updated successfully!
You need to reboot the RLM for the new image to take effect
NOTE : If your console connection is through the RLM,it will be disconnected

Step 4
Console connection through the RLM will now be dropped

Example where the old procedure was followed

Step 1 and Step 2 remains the same.

Please type ‘rlm update’ to load the new RLM firmware.

The following occurs when a rlm update is performed. There will be no message that the rlm update -f needs to be used. On screen during the rlm update it will show the new version but the rlm status will still display the old version.

filer1> rlm update

filer1> rlm reboot

Note:
To upgrade to version 4.x the minimum revision will need to be 3.1
